Battle Report: Eldar V Necrons 1500pts

Hey everyone,

Another battle report today, this time I was playing against a proxy Necron army, I wanted some play testing in against Necrons, I've only played the new codex a couple of times so am still not totally sure how best to play against it, so lets see how I got on!

I was against a build I would play if I where to pick up Necrons:

2 Overlords on Barges with warscythes, mindshackle scarabs (proxied as Rhinos)
4 Warrior squads of 5, 2 crypteks in each, 2 with pules and all 8 crypteks have lance (Proxied as IG)
6 Wraiths - 3 whips, 1 caster (Proxied as Terminators)
7 Scarab bases (Proxied as Wraithguard)
2 Annihilation Barges (Proxied as Vindicators)

I was taking my Battlefield Birmingham list:

Farseer - doom, warding
2x6 Dragons in Wave Serpents with scatter lasers and shuriken cannons
2x5 Avengers in Wave Serpents with bright lances and shuriken cannons
2x1 Vypers with scatter lasers, shuriken cannon
3x2 War Walkers all with scatter lasers

Not much to say on the Necrons, it's shooty, trisky and even has combat!

Battlefield:

Mission:
Take and hold with 5 objectives, Pitched Battle, 3 objectives went down the left flank, with 1 in the centre and 1 on the right flank.

Deployment:
Necrons won the roll and chose the side with most cover and deployed as so:
Annihilation Barge in the centre and on my right flank, the scarabs infront with the wraiths, the lord barges behind with the 1 warrior squad on my right flank on an objective, with the other 3 squads on the my far left flank.

I deployed in a castle formation on the right flank, taking the necrons head on!

I made a massive mistake, my troops choices are in the Wave Serpents on the right, I was so far away from the objectives it was going to be incredibly hard to get to them unscathed. I should of deployed on the opposite flank.

Turn1
I tried to seize the initiative and failed.

The Necrons moved up in a block towards my lines, while the warriors on the left flank moved up to try to take the uncontested objectives.

Shooting: All the shooting mounted to 2 dead war walkers, on from the right flank squad, the other from the left flank squad, all the shots into the serpents where cover saved.

Eldar: 1 solar pulse is used, after deploying in the ruin, the walkers move up a level to the roof, the 2 Wave Serpents move down the right flank to get take out the annihilation barge, the 2 dragon serpents move towards the left flank. While I turbo boost 1 vyper down the right flank to act as an annoyance.

Shooting: As it's night fight, I start to roll for distance and both bright lance wave serpents cannot see the annihilation barge....then the 2 lone war walkers fail to see, but the squad in the ruin can see the scarabs and kill a few bases, one of the dragon serpents can also see the scarab bases, killing another base or 2.

 Turn2

Necrons: both Barge move up to the centre of my army, the wraiths boxing me in the corner, scarabs moved up and ran into the woods ahead of my army, the warriors on the left flank move up again.

Shooting: the warriors on my left flank 1 squad shoots into to the Vyper destroying it, the 2nd squad shoots into the war walker stunning it, while the 3rd squad shakes the dragon serpent closest my board edge, the annihilation barge fail to destroy the vyper, so the warrior shoot into it, destroying it.

Assault: the wraiths are just in range of the dragon serpent, destroying it! The dragons are not pinned, the Wraiths consolidate, fanning out across the war walker and dragons.

End of Necron turn 2 movement phase

Eldar: Pulse is declared again. The dragons from the wrecked wave serpent move closer to the wraiths, the shaken dragon serpent moves up, pivots 180degrees and the dragons jump out (4 within 6"), the wave serpents on the right flank back away from the scarabs, while the war walker moves across to buy them time!

Shooting: the Dragons destroy the annihilation barge, while the other dragon squad full their shooting and only kill 1 wraith, the walkers in the ruin try to shoot into the wraiths, but fail to see!! everything else tries to shoot the scarabs, but can only kill a single base between them...

Turn3

Necrons: now firmly in control of the game the necrons move to crush the ailing Eldar, both lords do sweep attack on wave serpents, both landing 2 hits on each serpent, destroying one, the avenger serpent and 3 avengers! While the dragon serpent is lucky and no damage is caused! The lords then jump out and wait to charge. The scarabs move out of cover and close to the war walker on my right flank, the warriors move up my left flank again capturing the necrons 3rd objective.

Shooting: all 3 warrior squads on my left flank shoot into the war walkers but can only shake both! The warrior squad on my right flank shoot into the rear of the serpent that survived the lords sweeping attacks, both shots miss, the annihilation barge then has a choice, the rear of the serpent or the walkers, it chooses the rear of the serpent, but again fails to cause ANY damage.

Assaults: The scarabs assault the war walker, reducing it's armour by 2 and taking a wound in reply. The Wraiths butcher the fire dragons in front of them, while the war walker survives, the dragons are assaulted by the lord, who takes a wound before killing 3 dragons, which pass the LD check. The other lord charges the other avenger serpent, stunning it.

Eldar: Knowing I'm likely to be tabled I'm just playing for the fun of it now! I doom the lord by the avenger serpent, the avengers and farseer jump out the back of the serpent, the wave serpent in the centre, pivots and aims at the warrior squad.

Shooting: the wave serpent shoots into the warrior squad downing 3, the avengers and farseer shoot into the lord, taking 2 wounds off.

Assault both avenger squads charge into the lord, dragging it down.the Wraiths finish off the war walker and consolidate towards the avengesrs, while the scarabs are held by the walker again! The overlord can only kill 2 dragons in combat, the remaining dragon holds.

Turn4

Necrons: All 3 warriors and the lord fail to stand back up. The command barge moves behind the stunned serpent, the wraiths move back towards the centre of the table, the warrior move up again to capture the necrons 4th objective.

Shooting: everything is basically thrown into the war walkers on the roof, which are reduced to a single walker with no weapons and is immobilised. While the command barge destroys the avenger serpent.

Assault:The scarabs drag down the war walker, the lord then fails to kill the final dragon in combat! The wraiths assault the wave serpent in the centre, destroying it.

Eldar: I doom the scarabs and detach the farseer from the avenger squad and it moves towards the command barge.

Shooting: both avenger squads shoot the scarabs dead

Assault: the lord finishes off the fire dragon finally.

Turn5
And I'm tabled, the wraiths move up and assault both avenger squads, killing everything, the command barge opens up into the farseer who fails. The warriors then destroy the last war walker and all my toys are removed from the table!!!

Well that hurt!!!

I was totally out manoeuvred and due to my VERY poor deployment and first turn shooting I was never going to win this game! Luckily this was a practice game against myself and not in a tournament, I learnt soooo much from this game, but being tabled is never nice!

Lessons:
Deploying in a castle opposite the strongest part of the necron army was completely the wrong move, if I had deployed in a line or on the opposite flank I could of weathered the first 2 turns of night fight MUCH better as the scarabs and wraiths would of not been in combat turn2..

Objectives, for some unknown reason I didn't deploy my troops ANYWHERE near objectives?? It's something I make a massive point about in all of my battles, my troops never really tend to stray too far away from objectives... so I have no idea what I was doing! :(

Well their you go! I have another battle planned against Necrons against someone from the gaming club I attend most Tuesdays, so we'll see how I do against that!

More to come! :)
